Harris Academies
All Academies in our Federation aim to transform the lives of the students they serve by bringing about rapid improvement in examination results, personal development and aspiration.

Attendance & Punctuality

It is clearly in the best interest of every student that they attend the Academy every day. We have very high expectations for students’ attendance, and all students should aim for 100% attendance. 90% attendance across the year means 20 days of education lost. It is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that their child is on time, properly dressed, equipped for the day and ready to learn. Occasionally, there may be very good reasons why students cannot attend and we would ask parents/carers to inform the Academy immediately should this situation arise. Truancy is dealt with very seriously by both the Academy and the Education Welfare Officer.

If a student is unwell, parents/carers are asked to contact the Academy by phone or email (details provided) and also to provide a note upon return. Provided that the reason for absence falls within the regulations set down by the Department for Education, the absence will be recorded as ‘authorised’. Absence that falls outside these regulations, or is not supported by a note, is deemed to be ‘unauthorised’ and will be recorded as such. If a student is absent and we have not been informed, the Academy will telephone on the first day of absence.

If an illness is likely to result in absence for a prolonged period then parents/carers should request work to be sent home. Every effort will be made by teachers and the students to ensure work missed is completed.

The Academy will not authorise leave of absence for family holidays during term time. The Principal will not grant any leave of absence for students during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Any leave of absence taken without authorisation will be recorded as unauthorised absence and be referred to our Education Welfare Officer. Please be aware that rates of attendance and punctuality are automatically requested by all potential employers and Further Education providers.
