The 16-19 Tuition Fund

Statement on the use of the 16-19 tuition fund as required by the ESFA – detailed in their document '16-19 Tuition Fund' (updated in July 2021.)

We are publishing this statement to explain how we will use this funding in line with the guidance to prioritise support for disadvantaged students at Harris Academy Orpington. Where subsequent ESFA guidance changes, this statement may be updated to reflect any such change.

We are publishing this statement to demonstrate how additional funding of £8,371 for 16 to 19-year-old students (called the ’16 to 19 tuition fund’) will be utilised in the 2023-24 funding year.

The additional funding made available to the Academy will be used to provide 1:1 tuition and resources (textbooks and revision guides) in English, Maths and vocational courses where learning has been disrupted, for example where assessment has been deferred and/or otherwise disrupted because of lockdown.  Based upon teacher assessments, each student will have a plan for their intervention and their tutors will be informed of the areas of focus, and this will be recorded using Academy systems and costed according to need and the requirement for specialist/additional staffing and resources

Eligible students will be those identified by the Government as disadvantaged, meaning those who had not achieved a grade 4 or above in English or Maths by the age 16. All will be on a 16 to 19 study programme.

 

16-19 Tuition Fund 2023 to 2024 academic year

What is the 16-19 Tuition Fund?

The 16-19 tuition fund is a one-off funding allocation for 2023-2024 academic year only. The fund is being provided to support learners to catch up and close any gaps in their learning that may have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 lockdown. The fund will be used for small group and 1 to 1 tuition in English, Maths and vocational learning for 16 to 19-year-old learners. Who can be supported by this fund?

Learners must be aged 16-19 and must not have already achieved a GSCE grade 5 or above in maths and/or English by age 16. Students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) - including those aged 19 to 24 who require additional tuition to help them catch up with their studies - will also be supported by this provision.

 Implementation

 We will use the funding as follows:

• Recruiting specialists to work with students in small groups to support teaching and learning.
• Increasing the hours of some existing staff.
• Run 1 to 1 or small group sessions in addition to the existing timetabled hours.
• Offering additional support and interventions based on the individual needs of each student.
• Ensuring students have suitable accessibility software and hardware to enable home learning.

How are we using this Fund?

Tuition groups will comprise of up to five students and the tuition sessions will be scheduled in addition to the planned programme of study hours already timetabled for the academic year 2023-24. Tuition sessions will be delivered face to face, online or through a blended delivery model.

Examples of some of the tuition and support on offer includes:

• Maths topic support through designated lessons and revision sessions.
• English topic support through designated lessons and revision sessions.
• Additional 1 to 1 tuition in English and maths.
• GCSE revision workshops and assessment preparation support.
• Resources and materials to support students.
• Bespoke subject support/catch-up.
• Academic skills support and development.
• Tailored support intervention for all High Needs Students, this includes therapies (Physiotherapy and Occupational Sensory – OT) and support services such as SALT, mentoring and counselling.

• Technical Knowledge and skills support to aid mastery and make up for any shortfall from previous learning.
• Specialist Support to improve engagement for learners with SEND.
• Tuition Support offered will be assessed, based on an individual's needs, the identification of an individual starting point, clear learning goals, expectations and outcomes.

What is our pledge?

At Harris Academy Orpington we are committed to ensuring the tuition fund is used in accordance with the Government’s guidance on the 16 to 19 tuition fund by:

• Producing this statement setting out how the fund will be used to support the most disadvantaged students.
• Publishing this guidance on our website.
• Recording the use of the fund, including references to individual students who receive support, the needs of those students, the number of hours of tuition delivered and retain the evidence of the tuition provided and demonstrate the impact of the support provided
• Delivering the extra tuition and spend the allocated funds in the academic year 2023-24.
• Notify the Education Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) of any underspend from the Fund for it to be reclaimed.
