Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Sport & Physical Activity

(Equivalent to 1 A level)

Introduction:

Students will apply their practical skills and knowledge in preparation for further study or the workplace. Designed in collaboration with experts spanning the breadth of the sector, the Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity focuses on the skills, knowledge and understanding that today’s universities and employers demand.

Students will take six units made up of three mandatory and three optional units. The three mandatory units are:

  • Unit 1 - Body systems and the effects of physical activity
  • Unit 2 - Sports coaching and activity leadership
  • Unit 3 - Sports organisation and development

These units will give students an understanding of sport in the wider contexts of coaching and leadership, anatomy and physiology, the body’s short- and long-term responses to physical activity and the framework of sport in the UK and the organisations involved. Students will also develop transferable skills such as planning, communication, adaptability and leadership.

Assessment

These qualifications are assessed using a combination of assessment methods depending on the units selected, an example is shown below:

  • External assessment e.g. Unit 1 exam - 1 hour 30 minutes 70 marks - written paper comprising of multiple-choice, short answer questions and questions requiring more extended responses
  • Internal assessment e.g. assignments where the tutor assesses the students’ work and a moderator from the exam board externally moderates it.

Students must achieve at least a Pass in every unit or they will be awarded an unclassified result overall.

Career Progression

This qualification is not just about being able to play sport, it will provide learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress into Higher Education on a sport-related programme such as Sport and Physical Education, Sport Science, Sport Coaching and Development or Sport and Leisure Management.

This qualification needs to be taken in conjunction with other level 3 courses to allow access to higher education establishments.

Students may also want to progress into sport-related apprenticeship in one of these areas:

  • Leisure Centre Attendant
  • Leisure Centre Management
  • Sports coach/consultant
  • Sports policy at local level
  • Diet and fitness instructor
  • Personal trainer
