BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Art and Design

Introduction

This course is for students wishing to develop knowledge and skills in art and design through a vocational focus and can be used as a stepping stone to further progression, possibly in art and design education. The course is delivered through practical projects in art and design.

There are three mandatory units, which explore processes and methods of visually recording creative intentions, and students understanding and analysis of the work of artists and designers. Students develop skills and knowledge through an option unit in a specific area. The qualification is designed to enable students to develop their knowledge and skills in the sector and increase their levels of independence

Assessment

To complete the course students must complete four units

3 Mandatory Units

Unit 1.  Visual Recording and Communication

  • A task set and marked by Pearson and taken under supervised conditions.
  • Learners will be given a theme and a task in order to prepare a response before a supervised assessment period
  • The supervised assessment period is a maximum of three hours and can be arranged over a number of sessions in a period timetabled by Pearson.
  • Portfolio evidence.
  • 60 marks.

Unit 2.  Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design

  • A task set and marked by Pearson and taken under supervised conditions.
  • Learners will be given a research brief and a task before a supervised assessment period in order to prepare their response.
  • The supervised assessment period is a maximum of five hours and can be arranged over a number of sessions in a period timetable by Pearson.
  • Written submission.
  • 60 marks

Unit 3.  The Creative Process

  • A task set and assessed internally.
  • Understand the stages and activities within the creative process
  • Experiment with the stages and activities within the creative process to develop own working practice
  • Apply stages and activities within the creative process to develop own art and design work
  • Review how use of the creative process developed own art and design practice.

Optional Unit

Students will also have to study one additional optional unit. The unit chosen is;

Unit 16. 3D Design Craft Materials, Techniques and Processes

  • A task set and assessed internally
    Explore design craft materials, techniques and processes5.
  • Apply design craft practices to produce a design craft item that meets the requirements of a brief
  • Review and reflect on own design craft practices to improve future work

All units are assessed through project-based work and tasks.

Grading System: Pass to Distinction*

Career Progression                                                                          

The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by HE providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses, if taken alongside other level 3 qualifications. For students wishing to study an aspect of Art and Design in Higher Education, opportunities include:

  • BEng (Hons) in Aeronautical Engineering, if taken alongside A levels in Mathematics and Physics
  • BSc (Hons) Creative Technologies, if taken alongside a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Computing for the Creative Industries or A levels in Media and Computing.

This Level 3 qualification can also help students gain access to higher apprenticeships in the Art & Design industry
