Curriculum Overview

KEY STAGE 3

The key stage 3 programme of study is followed during years 7 and 8. In the core subjects students are put into sets appropriate to their ability. Sets are labelled A-F with A being the most able.  The majority of subjects are taught in general teaching bands- each year is also split into general teaching bands R (least able), N, P, T, M, Y (most able).

Those students who join the Academy below the expected standard in English are placed into one of our three Hub groups with additional literacy support to help them ‘catch up’.

KEY STAGE 5

The Key Stage 5 Programme allows students to pick up to four level 3 courses. Broadly there are three routes:

Route 1: Academic route (Most Able).

Students start year 12 with three or  four AS qualifications, even in decoupled qualifications students sit the AS exam at the end of year 12 to give an indication on the progress they are making

Route 2: Academic and Vocational.

Students start year 12 with at least three level 3 courses, which could be a blend of academic and vocational courses. The exception to this is where students are resitting level 2 English and/or Mathematics.

Route 3: Vocational – Sports Academy

Students within the Sports Academy study a range of qualifications depending upon their sport.

Footballers complete Level 2 qualifications over two years.

Boxers complete Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications over two years.

In addition the Sports Academy provides the opportunity for students to complete additional qualifications including:

  • AASE
  • Gym Instructors Level 2 and Level 3
  • FA Coaching

All students opt in to the enrichment programme which contains EPQ, CEIAG,

Students are also allocated directed study time of 9 periods per fortnight.
